The Duchess was visiting the market, accompanied by Prince Charles, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of London Farmers’ Markets. When the couple reached the CBD oil Hempden stall, Camilla was eager to talk about the oil’s potential therapeutic benefits. She told the stall staff she had heard fantastic things about the new product. The Duchess even sampled oil from the stall and told nearby reporters it was delicious.
She asked several questions about CBD oil and how it’s made before again declaring her positive attitude towards the vendors: “This oil is so fantastic. It helps so many people. I’ve spoken to people who have serious conditions such as epilepsy that have benefited from it,” she said.
CBD Oil in the UK
Only a few years ago, CBD and its products weren’t recognized in the nation’s Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) market, but the popular oil has since blossomed into an annual 300-million pound industry. Between 2017 and 2018, CBD usage grew 99% in the UK. Analysts expect CBD’s reach to skyrocket over the next two years into well over a billion-pound market.
Simon Manthorpe of CBD oil testing service EOS Scientific doesn’t expect the growth or development of new products to stop anytime soon. “With greater research, we could see CBD oil become much more prevalent in the world of medicine,” says Manthorpe, “With it becoming the hero of modern medicinal practices, in some cases.”
Manthorpe recognizes that CBD oil has strong potential benefits in medicine but is already having impacts on other consumer goods like cosmetics, consumables, and several other markets. It’s difficult to visit a London cosmetic store or market without seeing the ubiquitous CBD oil.
What Exactly is CBD Oil?
It’s one of the fastest-growing markets in the UK, but what is CBD oil? CBD is a compound known as a cannabinoid which occurs naturally in the cannabis family of plants. CBD is believed to work with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system by binding to cannabinoid receptors found all over the body.
Research is very early on CBD, but because the endocannabinoid system is involved in several physiological and psychological processes, CBD could have several therapeutic benefits. CBD differs from the other popular cannabinoid THC in that CBD doesn’t cause a high.
Is CBD Oil Legal in the UK?
CBD Hemp Oil is legal in the UK if it doesn’t contain any THC, which is still considered a controlled substance under the UK’s 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act. Those with a medical prescription can also purchase and use cannabis oil, or CBD oil that contains THC.
CBD is growing quickly in popularity among athletes, celebrities, and even the royal family. It’s difficult to tell if the compound’s popularity will fade anytime soon.
